Local Radio Personality and Musicians Raising Funds for SMA

What happens when a band auctions their services off to raise funds for a great cause, and Greg Dwyer wins the auction? He turns it into yet another fundraiser for the cause.

It seems that thing really happened, as Electric Shock donated a private show to be auctioned off as part of a fundraiser. When Dwyer won the auction, he thought a better option than a private party for a few of his friends would be a rockin’ fundraiser.

So this Saturday, Greg Dwyer, House Arrest and Electric Shock will put on a benefit fundraiser for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). The event will be held at Rascals Live in Moline. Doors open at 7, with a $10 cover. There will be door prizes and raffles. Dwyer and others have been hard at work putting together a fantastic event. Along with the raffles and door money, Kenny of Rascals is donating proceeds from Bud draft sales.

Funds raised at the event will go to Cure SMA, an organization dedicated to research and caring for patients with SMA. To learn more about the organization, check out http://www.curesma.org

Tom Ramirez, drummer for House Arrest has a daughter affected by SMA. You can also get more information from their page http://miracleformadi.blogspot.com/.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a group of inherited disorders characterized by a loss of certain nerve cells called motor neurons. Motor neurons transmit nerve impulses from the brain or spinal cord (brainstem) to muscle or glandular tissue. The loss of motor neurons leads to progressive muscle weakness and muscle wasting (atrophy) in muscles closest to the trunk of the body (proximal muscles) such as the shoulders, hips and back. These muscles are necessary for crawling, walking, sitting up and head control. The more severe types of SMA can affect muscles involved in feeding, swallowing and breathing.
