Hinterland Music Festival Details

ST. CHARLES, Iowa. (July 27, 2018) — More than 20,000 music and camping lovers from 41 states and 3 countries are expected for the fourth annual Hinterland Music Festival in St. Charles, Iowa, on Friday, August 3 and Saturday, August 4.

Grammy Award-winning country music and roots rock singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson and South Carolina-based indie-rock band Band of Horses will headline the festival at Avenue of the Saints Amphitheater, just 30 miles south of Des Moines. The 2018 event also features Scottish synth-pop band CHVRCHES, Denver folk artist Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, classic Southern rockers Blackberry Smoke and up-and-coming country star Margo Price. R&B musician Anderson East, independent Melbourne busker turned singer-songwriter Tash Sultana, the energetic, piano-driven roots rock of J Roddy Walston and The Business, country singers Tyler Childers and Joshua Hedley will also perform. Completing the lineup are Iowa acts The Nadas, celebrating their 25th anniversary, and R&B synth gaze group Ancient Posse.

Hinterland enhances the unique atmosphere of Iowa's beautiful rural landscape with music, camping and activities ranging from children’s crafts to after-hours campfire performances.

Advance purchase is recommended. Festival tickets, camping, parking and shuttle passes are on sale now at hinterlandiowa.com. Tickets without fees can be purchased at the Wooly’s Box Office (504 East Locust, Des Moines, Iowa) from 12-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. You cannot buy tickets at Wooly’s the day of the festival.

Children 12 and under are freely admitted to Hinterland, as long as they’re accompanied by a paying adult. However, the VIP section is only for folks 21 and up.


Tent camping is available for $25 – $35 per person. Buy early to ensure you get the area of camping you want. Bronze and Kind camping remain. Limited RV camping is also available. Get more information on camping at Hinterland at http://hinterlandiowa.com/camping.

Campfire Stage

The camping experience at Hinterland will feature the late-night Campfire Stage, including performances exclusively for campers each night of the festival from 11:00 p.m. (after the headliners) until 2:00 a.m. This year's Campfire Stage headliner is comedic country artist Wheeler Walker Jr. Any camping pass will give you access to the Campfire Stage.

A fun-filled kid corner of Hinterland Music Festival, Hinterkids, features coloring stations and activities on Friday from 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. (coloring, faux foliage crowns) and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. (coloring, collaborative mural, necklace making).

Pick up a copy of the Hinterkids Activity Book, by local artist Ramona Muse Lambert. These magnificent collector's items will be available for free at Hinterkids for the first 1,000 visitors. Food & Drinks

A wide variety of food and drinks will be available, including a craft beer tent, special Hinter and Fire Mules and a wide variety of food vendors. There will also be special brunch options at the Hinterland Café on Saturday morning, featuring tunes from Porter Union and Izabel Crane and delicious offerings from Mo Rub and Formaro’s Stuffed Grill. Merch Tent

Visit the merch tent at Hinterland, which will feature a wide selection of vinyl, posters, CDs, t-shirts and more from Hinterland bands. There will also be special Hinterland merch — including t-shirts, tank tops, hats, bandanas, camping mugs, blankets and air sofas.

Getting to the Festival

Hinterland is located at Avenue of the Saints Amphitheater, 3357 St. Charles Rd, St. Charles, Iowa, 50240. Please allow extra time (especially during peak festival hours) when traveling to Hinterland.

Peak times to secure parking and exchange tickets for wristbands will be on Friday, August 3 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to plan accordingly. Organizers will begin scanning tickets and placing wristbands on Noon on Friday to encourage quicker lines once gates do open at 3:00 p.m.


Help reduce traffic and our carbon footprint by letting us do the driving for you. We’re providing $10 unlimited shuttle passes from Des Moines to Hinterland. Pickup is at Southridge Mall (1111 E Army Post Rd, Des Moines, Iowa) and includes free parking. Shuttles will run continuously Friday, August 3 from 3:00 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. and Saturday, August 4 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 a.m.


Two-day parking passes for all lots are available in advance for $15-$25 and can be purchased online at hinterlandiowa.com. Day-of parking is available for $10/day in the General Parking lot — payable by cash only on site. Camping parking lots (Gold, Silver, Bronze & Kind) open at 10:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Hinterland Music Festival, August 3 – 4, 2018, is two days of music curated for people who love both music and the outdoors. True to its name, Hinterland is held in St. Charles, a beautiful rural escape just outside Des Moines, Iowa.
